Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada Season Finale Sunday Notebook

It seemed as though the final race of the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama would have an anticlimactic finish Sunday at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. The morning saw chilly temperatures and a steady drizzle and mist that created poor visibility and treacherous racing conditions.

With all of the Series Championships solidified in Saturday’s race, it seemed as though the 45-minute race around the 10-Turn twisty road course would simply be an exercise in preservation.

Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada Season Finale Saturday Notebook

The penultimate race of the season for Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama competitors Saturday felt a lot like Friday’s Round 5, rescheduled from Watkins Glen International, but with a twist.

While the end results look exceedingly similar and the No. 9 of Scott Hargrove in the Pfaff Motorsports/Castrol entry sailed across the finish line to take his 10th season victory, more importantly, he also clinched the Platinum Cup Series Championship for 2017.

The Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama competitors entered the final race weekend of the season facing several challenges. While the points battle in Gold Cup has been decisively clinched by young Roman De Angelis in the No. 78 entry for Mark Motors Racing, Platinum Cup and the Platinum Masters Championship are still tight, and anyone’s game.

Championships Come Down to The Wire at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama

And it all ends where it began: The 2017 IMSA Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama season draws to a close at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP) in Bowmanville, Ontario, Sept. 1-3.

Will the two 45-minute sprint races on the 3.96-km (2.459-mile) track turn out the same as they did in the season opener? Maybe. But this has been such an intense year in the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada that few would be surprised if several of the so-close drivers who are winless for 2017 just go for it in the closing round.

Pause. Play. Repeat. That was the theme for the second of two Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama 45-minute sprint races at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres. While Sunday’s overall and class podiums were categorically the same as Saturday, those results were by no means by rote.
